Chevy Tires wearing quickly

Most all our Chevy BOC vans go through tires like crazy. Most wearing one side of the tire while the opposite side looks practically new. We've had the front ends aligned with only a short term difference made. We're now taking the front tires off at the first sign of uneven wear and flipping the tire on the rim to extend the life though there has to be a better alternative...any thoughts?

Tire wear in Transit Bus applications can NORMALLY be narrowed to the following conditions, which you have identified a couple:

1.  Alignment of vehicle

2.  Biggie:  Tire inflation.  For most transit applications staying about 5 psi below maximum for tire weight carrying capacity will normally provide a little better wear.

3.  Tire selection.  Tires are not just tires.  All tires are made from specific recipe's.  Using a higher chip / chunk compounded tire with a reinforced sidewall is normally the best choice.

4.  Driver education.  Easy start and stop.  Not 'curbing tires'.  Anticipate braking.

5.  Big item in Transit applicaitons is loading.  Make sure the vehicle is operating within the Altoona testing parameters for your vehicle and within the chassis manufacturer's guidelines.  I find some transit busses are not loaiding properly, i.e. too heavy on a side or corner.  This will cause premature tire wear.

The biggest item if all the operating issues to check is the type tire you choose.  Try the Web sites of Goodyear, Michelin and Toyo for good information about special application tires.

Hi folks. We have a problem with front tire wear on our Chevy body-on-chassis vehicles. We have extended the life of the tires by catching them at the appropriate time and flipping them on the rim. It takes a little time during the Preventative Maintenance service though we're getting much more life out of them and they are more worn when we get rid of them.

Oh yeah, we tried all the alignments, tire manufacturer, etc. though nothing fixed the problem for more than a couple months, so so far this has been the cheapest version.
